Lean on Me: A Tribute to Bill Withers
The Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw (JOC) and Jeangu Macrooy join hands for a tribute to the legendary soul singer and songwriter Bill Withers. Withers, who passed away in 2020, is known for all-time classics like Lean On Me, Ain’t No Sunshine, Grandma’s Hands, and Lovely Day. Jeangu Macrooy is looking forward to covering these and other songs in Lean On Me: A Tribute to Bill Withers. ‘‘If there’s one artist I would like to pay a tribute to, it is Bill Withers’’, explains Jeangu. “As a songwriter and artist I’m standing on his shoulders; his musical legacy is unmatched!’’ Withers is also a great inspiration for the musicians of the JOC. In new big band arrangements the musicians of the world famous orchestra are challenged to give it everything they got and to add new meaning to this influential oeuvre by improvisation.
